How RSS Syndication Feeds Work

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication (or Rich Site Summary or RDF Site Summary, depending on who you ask). It's the next-generation of the internet because RSS helps to focus an internet that has become increasingly filled with advertising and other "clutter".

RSS gives websites a way to communicate with each other. RSS allows anyone to put together bits and pieces of information from any website onto any website. Imagine putting your product catalog, or online library, or weblog anywhere on the internet!

What is an RSS Feed?

RSS is an XML-based data stream that allows information from one website to be used across an unlimited number of websites. RSS Feeds are used to transmit a sort of "lite" version of a website's most freshly updated content. This "lite" version - called a "feed" - can be applied to any webpage by a website developer that knows about XML and XSL Transformation, or can be added to an RSS Aggregator's RSS Feed list for distribution.

RSS Feed Publishers

RSS Feeds are generally news agencies, periodicals, blogs, or product catalogs. The people (or companies) that provide these RSS Feeds are called "Publishers". Generally RSS Feeds are updated regularly, guarantee-ing the most fresh and current content for visitors.

RSS Feeds broaden a publisher's reader base and help readers by focusing on the most relevant and current information - eliminating the need to look thru several sites and clutter to find they really want to read.

RSS Feed Aggregators

RSS Aggregators are places that collect many RSS Feeds for sharing and distribution. RSS Aggregators help web surfers organize their RSS Feeds for viewing - letting them scan the latest information from all the websites they regularly surf in a single page.

RSS Feed Readers

RSS Readers are programs that people can install on their desktops to organize and view RSS Feeds.
